Fertility Assessment At Sameda Clinics, Lagos

Fertility assessment is the process by which fertility is evaluated. At their first visit, a fertility assessment is done for the couple to see where the issues may lay. It can also be individualized in singles who want to know their fertility status.

FERTILITY ASSESSMENT IN WOMEN

This includes:

  1. History taking – taking in past medical history, family, surgical and social history, etc.
  2. Medical examination – checking vital signs and physical examination.
  3. Ultrasound scan – to assess the current state of the uterus and to look for other possible abnormalities.
  4. Investigations: which involve blood tests – hormonal profile, thyroid profile, infection screening, etc.
  5. Other Radiologic diagnostic tools – To appreciate the uterus and adnexa better. This may involve
    • HSG (Hysterosalpingography): This is a radiologic procedure to investigate the shape of the uterine cavity and the shape and patency of the fallopian tubes.
    • Sonohysterography: This is more sensitive, specific, and accurate in the evaluation of the uterine cavity. It involves the use of saline infusion and ultrasound scans to evaluate the uterus and uterine cavity.
    • Hysteroscopy: It is a procedure that involves examining the inside layer of the uterus (womb) using a hysteroscope. It can be diagnostic or operative.
      • Sometimes there may be a need for a surgical procedure e.g. an open myomectomy if recommended.

FERTILITY ASSESSMENT IN MEN

This includes:

  1. History taking – taking in past medical history, family, surgical and social history, etc.
  2. Medical examination – checking vital signs and physical examination.
  3. Investigations: which involve blood tests – hormonal profile, serum testosterone, Seminal fluid analysis (+/- Seminal Fluid MCS), viral screening, etc.
  4. Other Radiologic investigations- if recommended, for example, testicular/scrotal scan.
